Data Storage Converter

Convert bits and bytes using clearly labeled decimal KB/MB/GB and binary KiB/MiB/GiB units.

✓ Free to use · Runs in your browser · No sign-up

Enter a value. Your answer appears below.

Choose the unit you have in “From” and the unit you need in “To”. No calculate button needed.

Decimal units (KB, MB, GB) use steps of 1,000. Binary units (KiB, MiB, GiB) use steps of 1,024. One byte contains 8 bits.

Numbers only. For example, 12.5 or 1e6 (one million).

Start with a number above, or try the example below.

Example: 1 KB = 1,000 bytes; 1 KiB = 1,024 bytes. Results show up to 15 significant digits. Very large or small answers may use e notation: 1e6 means 1,000,000. Numbers are processed only in this browser.

How to use Data Storage Converter

  1. Enter the file size or storage amount without a unit name.
  2. Choose the stated unit carefully: MB and MiB are separate choices.
  3. Choose the output unit. The answer updates immediately, including decimal and binary comparisons.

A closer look

A byte contains eight bits. Decimal storage prefixes multiply by 1,000: 1 KB is 1,000 bytes and 1 MB is 1,000,000 bytes. Binary prefixes multiply by 1,024: 1 KiB is 1,024 bytes and 1 MiB is 1,048,576 bytes. The KB label is the familiar decimal kilobyte spelling used here. A 1 GB amount is about 0.931322574615 GiB; the data has not shrunk, only the unit has changed.

A practical example

1 KB is 1,000 bytes, while 1 KiB is 1,024 bytes. Keep decimal and binary prefixes distinct when comparing a drive label with an operating system display.

A useful tip

Check how your operating system or device labels storage before choosing a unit. A label saying GB may sometimes be used for a binary calculation. This tool never silently treats GB as GiB.

Good questions. Simple answers.

Are megabits and megabytes the same?

No. Eight bits make a byte. Select Bit or Byte explicitly; this converter measures amounts of data, not network transfer rates.

Why are fractional bytes allowed?

They are useful for mathematical comparisons. An actual file has a whole number of bytes, so a fractional result does not claim that a partial byte can be stored as a file.
